Social Media Ad Lingo

February 02, 20233 min read

People feel overwhelmed when stepping into the digital ad world, mostly because the language is unfamiliar.

Some of my clients have even described the first few weeks of launching a campaign to be like "learning a foreign language".

So, today I'm going to bring some clarity to the language I use with clients, when launching digital social media ad campaigns, such as Facebook(TM) and Instagram(TM) ads.

Let me explain what things means and how to interpret 'agency speak'.

Hope this helps...

Social Media Ad Lingo you may not understand

The Basics

Ad. An advertisement that your audience will see in their feed. An ad is made up of: copy, creative and call-to-action

Copy. The copywriting on the ad. It's purpose is persuade your audience to click.

Creative. The video, image or graphic on the ad. It's purpose is to stop your audience from scrolling & persuade them to click.

Call-To-Action (CTA). This is used to describe the next action you ask your audience to make. For example, "Click here to learn more" is a CTA.

Campaign. This word is used to describe all ads, audiences and strategy within that specific advertising push. For example, your 'ad campaign' may include multiple audiences and ad sets.

Ad Set. A group of ads launched under one audience.

Audiences. Used to describe a group of people that see your posts and ads. Or the people you will be target to see your ads (using the advertising software).

Offer. The product or service you will deliver to leads or clients after they purchase.

Launch. When your offer becomes available to your audience.

Related to Your Strategy

Lead Magnet (freebie). Usually a guide, e-book, blueprint, audit, or call (related to your offer). That you give your audience for free or low cost in exchange for their contact information.

Funnel. This is a strategic series of website pages that will guide leads to purchase your offer.

Landing Page. The first page of your funnel and the page people see after clicking on your ad.

Nurture Sequence (email sequence). This is a series of emails strategically delivered to guide leads to purchase your offer.

Script. The words that are written out for you say in a video. Usually used as an ad creative.

Metrics

Ad Spend. The amount of money you spend on ads.

Lead. Someone who is interested in your brand, and has given you some of their personal information (usually name and email).

Client or Customer. Someone who has purchased your product or service.

CPC (Cost per Click). The average amount of money it costs for each click from ad to your funnel page.

CPL (Cost per Lead). The average amount of money it costs for each lead (email address) you aquire.

CPA (Cost per Acquisition). The average amount of money spent to acquire a client or customer.

NOTE: These terms are the most frequently used terms between an ad manager and their client. If you're looking to DIY your own ads, this list will not cover everything you'll need to understand to operate your own ad campaign.
